It can be hard as a child with braces. It may be even harder for a parent of a child with braces. It can be pricey, take a lot of self AND parental maintenance, difficult when kids are in sports and the list goes on and on. Braces can be celebrated as a sign of your child entering teen-hood or dreaded because they are not quite sure how they will look and feel once they are in. It’s a monumental moment in your child’s life.
When is the right time for braces? Here at RLJ Dental, we have information on the right time to get your child into braces. Let’s take a look.
First, we need to establish if your child needs braces at all. Our dentists usually recommend orthodontic treatment in the form of braces when there is overlapping, crooked and crowded teeth, underbites, overbites or incorrect jaw positioning. This will improve orofacial appearance and, ideally, prevent further problems later in life.
Second, if you have established that your child needs braces, when is the right time? Children can benefit most from braces and general orthodontic treatment between the ages of 10 and 14. This is best for the child because their bodies and, more specifically, their skeletal structure are still changing. A child’s head and jaw are still growing, making it easier for teeth to be straightened out with braces. Also, braces are typically placed for 18-30 months. If done during the aforementioned age range, teeth and jaw positioning can be straightened out relatively quickly.
Most common complaints about braces are for cosmetic reasons. These are the sensitive years for your child so make sure that you are talking about the idea of them getting braces. Sharing with them the benefits of braces and how it could keep them from having other oral issues in the future is a great place to start.
